Yes, story authors are up, and I'm fascinated to see who wrote what. I guess the least surprising is that it was Merry who wrote 'Buoyancy'.
Mine were The Little Dustbuster That Could and The Sprinkle Fairy. Happily nobody guessed these, so I owe no ficlets. Many thanks (again) to beta readers
nopseud,
joyfulseeker and
msktrnanny. If you want material to mock me for months, you can go behind the cut and read the sequence of woe... but it's mostly for my own reference. Meanwhile, thanks for the feedback - I will reply properly tomorrow!
from notes made during the process, except the italicised bits, which are from Now
Story One
11th November
Received SeSa notification email.
Screamed.
Gibbered at high volume, disconcerting husband.
Sent brief but impassioned email to
nopseud
Gibbered more.
12th November
Attempted some characterisation notes of what I thought I might like to write. (Ahaha) Quite a lot of notes, a few of which even made it into the final story, included profound and wondrous JC characterisation, dragons, penguins, Lance has goats now/Is that code? A kitten? a Whodunnit? Little cryptic notes left by Justin-from-next-year? Maybe he discovers a time machine at the end of the trail?
Gibbering now at bearable level, according to husband. He is a placid soul.
13 November
Somewhere in there the notion of a time-travelling dustbuster seems to have been born. Story, amazingly, beginning to burgeon. Semi-intelligent thoughts about Justin wanting to throw off the kid and all his trappings, and be the man. nsync = kid. Hmm.
Notes for non-JuC scenes already... but where is my JC?
16 November
Found useful dates from
canalbaby's magnificent Chronology. Thought about maybe writing something.
Nope, still gibbering.
Recipient currently awol, but checked through last year's notes and found Useful Stuff. This trawl through the notes leads me to recognise that I did not, however, manage actually to include food, sleeping together, much detail on what they were wearing, clothes-swapping, cuddling, rain, or much of rest, in eventual story. Did attempt to have viewpoint character rather less than completely self-aware/accurate in perceptions, but not sure if this worked.
Have really stupid title in 'this is my title' mental space. Hope betas talk me out of it. They didn't
17 November
Worked out a more-or-less correct plan for the story. A bit worried, as I don't usually do this. Normally I just know where a story is going, and write it chronologically. Have a feeling I am going to leave out the Awkward Bits and try to fill them in later.
18 November
Gibbered.
Wondered vaguely whether my victim/recipient would be puzzled by all the gibbering, if only she knew.
Consoled self with certainty that Everybody Else Would Understand.
19 November
Wrote something! Yay. 1,035 words, so I've got the beginning mostly done. Um. Hmm. Stopped half-way through the golf, as Chris not obnoxious enough. Also, I omitted a necessary Justin/JC dialogue scene as I have NO CLUE what they are going to say to each other.
20 Nov - 3 Dec
May have written something. Also gibbered.
4th December
Oops - aside from finishing the golf scene, which is kinda adorable but TOO LONG (thank you Chris), no progress at all. OMG. Have been pretending I'm doing research by reading JuC, and keep being distracted by Trickyfish. Sigh.
5th December
It's like writing in treacle, and every time I think Oh, yesyesyes, and have a bit I can get going on, I have to do something else, like get into a very expensive taxi so as to take the Boy to his weekly appointment. Sigh.
But I have 4,462 words now, yay me! Including an actual scene with JC, who is making me paranoid with terror.
Later
Hah!
flambeau posted a not-giving-any-hints-to-DWNOGA-author post, hah! Possibly just as well, not sure I have any more JuC inspiration except Sappy Notion Which Shall Not Be Written. But, also quiz, quotes from shows. Is Who fan as well as SGA, so combed through some quotation sites. Might be fun to hide a few Who quotes in the fic, particularly with the time travel theme, though didn't find many useful ones. Was a good SGA time travel quote, though! Somewhat after Christmas, watch SGA and realise it was in fact from a time travel episode, not mere snarking. Hee.
Unfortunately the cleverest and snarkiest Who quotes make me think Trickyfish. What are the odds
4,546 word count at end of day. Go me.
Later
Book by husband's bedside inspired lesbian porn moment, though is actually sequel to 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'. Gives me small clue about JC and what Justin is thinking, anyway. Finally started reading 'Lila' after Christmas and discovered multiple-temporality in there too, which made me happy
Story seems to be assembling itself in bizarre order. JC still mostly absent, curse his little cotton socks.
Later Yet
Astonishingly, finished, several days before deadline. Sent to betas, seems acceptable but shallow. Sigh. Also, beta A dismayed by complete absence of Joey! Quite true. Must amend.
Unfortunately passed it through Word for beta process, which inserted sodding peculiar characters. First posting - early, no less - failed to remove them. Fortunately
eponymous noticed and amended crappy bits. Transpired that I managed to produce story twice, bloody typical. Oh well.
Conclusion: very self-consciously written, characters very seldom took over (thank you, Chris!). Sigh.
Gibbering powering down, as too late to do anything about it.
SeSa story #2
21st December, am
Saw backup request. Thought, hmm, I can do that. Said so.
Considered possibilities. Ah - crack, she likes my crack!fic (if not, is Her Own Fault for sending happy feedback, hah). Fairy dust. Sprinkles - probably inspired by recent Christmas cookie footage.
Half-way through story, realise no need for actual magic dust as JC and Chris obviously already in love. Also, funnier that way.
21st December, pm, or possibly, 22nd, very am
Finish story, get ultra-quick beta-for-Briticisms, turn it in.
Not without gibber element as do not wish to disappoint actual friend, but *enormously* easier to write.
In summary, quite different from last year's DWNOGA experience in pretty well every way.
JuC! For Torch!
